Most re-stucco jobs start the same way, with the old finish failing in one of two ways. Either it is cracked and chalky from years of sun, or it was never done right the first time and water has been getting behind it. Either way, the job is not just spraying a new coat over the old one. We go over the whole wall first, find the soft spots, and deal with them before any new material goes on.
Once the wall is sound, we patch sheathing where it needs it, add or repair lath in the areas that are bare or damaged, and check the weather barrier underneath. Then it is a base coat, built up in layers, followed by the finish coat in whatever color and texture you pick. This is also the point where a homeowner can change the look of the house entirely, since the old color has no bearing on the new one.
Albuquerque's dry heat and the big swing between daytime sun and nighttime cool mean new stucco needs to cure slowly and evenly, not bake in an afternoon. That affects how and when the coats go on, especially in summer.
How it runs
- Inspection The existing wall is checked for cracks, soft spots, and moisture damage before anything is removed.
- Strip and patch Failed stucco is cut out and sheathing is repaired anywhere it has been compromised.
- Lath repair New lath is fastened over any bare or damaged sections so the fresh stucco has something to grip.
- Base coat A scratch coat and brown coat are built up over the wall and given time to set.
- Finish coat The final texture and color coat is applied and worked to match across the whole surface.
